Academic Innovation Catalyst

CATALYZING ACADEMIC INNOVATION FOR POSITIVE IMPACT.

Our Mission

AIC is dedicated to amplifying university-based innovation in deep tech, specifically ClimateTech & AI for Good. Partnering initially with UC Berkeley, we offer proof-of-concept funding and support to turn groundbreaking academic research into socially impactful real-world applications.

WHAT AIC OFFERs

AIC provides comprehensive support to academic innovators, including non-dilutive grants for exploring commercial pathways, access to legal advice, business planning, market research, team building, and funding source guidance, all tailored to specific needs.

  • Early-stage, non-dilutive funding that is available even before a new venture has been formed and through a very efficient and flexible application process. Grants may be used for market research, prototype development and other commercialization activities (rather than for basic research).

  • Access to bespoke, hands-on and very sophisticated advice and support with such matters as formation of a new venture, negotiation and acquisition of intellectual property rights, and research of applicable regulatory matters.

  • Support in conducting Market Research and Analyses to assess product–market fit and the commercial viability and sustainability of an innovation.

  • Advice and support on building a Founding Team through recruiting and “matchmaking” with experienced entrepreneurs.

  • Advice regarding the creation of a Business Plan/ Business Model Canvas and Pitch Decks that may be used with prospective funding sources and team members. For philanthropic ventures, this could include help developing a theory of change and impact measurement strategies to attract foundation and other funding.

  • Advice regarding the range of possible Downstream Funding Sources—including traditional venture, impact investments and purely philanthropic, along with introductions to each type of funder as appropriate.

OPPORTUNITIES AIC SEEKs TO BACK

We're on the lookout for early-stage innovations in ClimateTech and AI for Good that are at the commercialization stage and poised for significant social impact. AIC seeks to catalyze ventures from academic research that are at the pre-venture or recent venture formation stage.
